We explore this rural area watered by the gently flowing Xanthos River before we arrive at Xanthos Ancient City. This UNESCO world heritage site was the capital of the Lycian Civilisation from the earliest times till the Roman period, when the capital was moved to Patara. There is beautiful funerary artwork to be seen here at this compact but fascinating city.
From here we continue across the plain to Patara village.
Day 6. Relaxing day. Simple ride via ancient city of Patara and then to Patara beach and back.
A day of relative leisure. After a relaxing morning, you can ride via the Lycian Metropolis of Patara, the capital during Roman times, to visit the expansive ruins, partially sand-covered. This was the birthplace of St Nicholas and there are several churches where he may have preached as a young man. The other outstanding remains are the Roman bathhouses, the colonnaded streets, and the massive theatre. The recently restored council chamber (Boulitourieon) is an example of how magnificent the buildings were in their time and is thought to be the first parliament of a federal democracy that the world has seen.
After the cultural delights, it is a very short ride to Patara beach, one of the least spoiled in the Mediterranean, with 18 km of golden sand, and not one (modern) building in sight.ropping from the high mountain we descend to the beach, taking in 2 major Ancient Cities en route.
Day 7. Morning ride via Kalkan along the coast to Kas. Probably the nicest coastal road in Turkey.
45km along the coast to end the tour. Time in the lovely town of Kas for a Turkish Bath to soothe the muscles.
From Patara we ride inland, through farmland and forest climbing to the Akbel pass for a well deserved tea stop, before passing the attractive harbour town of Kalkan and completing our journey with a fantastic coastal ride into Kas. There will be a chance to swim during the day. On arrival in Kas we have the option to relax with a massage in a local Hamam.
