Day 6. Relaxing day. Simple ride via ancient city of Patara and then to Patara beach and back.
A day of relative leisure. After a relaxing morning, you can ride via the Lycian Metropolis of Patara, the capital during Roman times, to visit the expansive ruins, partially sand-covered. This was the birthplace of St Nicholas and there are several churches where he may have preached as a young man. The other outstanding remains are the Roman bathhouses, the colonnaded streets, and the massive theatre. The recently restored council chamber (Boulitourieon) is an example of how magnificent the buildings were in their time and is thought to be the first parliament of a federal democracy that the world has seen.
After the cultural delights, it is a very short ride to Patara beach, one of the least spoiled in the Mediterranean, with 18 km of golden sand, and not one (modern) building in sight.ropping from the high mountain we descend to the beach, taking in 2 major Ancient Cities en route.
